Irrespective of the style of our worship service, the order is the same. According to the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (USA) the order offered is a logical progression, it is rooted in the Old and New Testaments, and it reflects the tradition of the universal Church and our Reformed heritage. The order we use is presented in terms of five major actions centered in the Word of God. If a worship service can be seen as a building as is suggested in Dr. Constance Cherry’s, “The Worship Architect,” the actions might be viewed as “load bearing walls” forming “rooms” each of which is appointed appropriately. The actions … the “walls” are: • gathering around the Word • proclaiming the Word • responding to the Word • the sealing of the Word • bearing and following the Word into the world.
Each Sunday morning, we hold three worship services in order to accomodate the needs of our congregation. You can learn more about the style of these services below. In our sanctuary we make intensive use of multi-media. Additionally, for the hearing impaired, we have an FM transmitter audio system which can be accessed by borrowing a receiver from the information carousel in the narthex. Also, our loop system can be accessed by those with loop-enabled hearing aids.
Each service includes a special and separate time for the children. The youngsters sit with our pastor for an object lesson pertaining to the season of the year or the sermon and text for the day. Following this time, all
the children not yet in first grade exit the worship service for their own program in the nursery. Older children remain in the sanctuary for our family oriented worship.
Our traditional worship services include inspiring music presented by our chancel choir and, from time to time, our bell choir (Laudate Ringers). The choir sings a variety of music appealing to all tastes ... from contemporary artists and composers to the masters of what we commonly refer to as traditional or classical pieces.
Come As You Are ... a worship experience (CAYA) is for those who prefer a more casual worship atmosphere. It is especially appealing to folks who are new to church attendance. In a relaxed atmosphere, the service features a flexible approach to format and a blend of modern Christian music and modernized old standards provided by our Praise Team. The teaching time is interactive as the preacher for the day sits with the worshippers as they consider the text together.
Holy Communion, the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, Eucharist is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month. This is subject to slight change if a liturgical day falls near the first Sunday and it is deemed the appropriate day for Communion. For example, if the First Sunday of Advent fell on the final Sunday of the month, Communion would be celebrated then instead of on the following Sunday. Communion is also celebrated on Maundy Thursday, Christmas Eve (late service only) and during Fifth Sunday Vespers when they are held. On occasion the bread and cup are distributed to the congregation as they sit in the pews while at other times the congregation members come to the chancel area to receive the Sacrament.
In addition to Sunday morning worship, we have special services which include:
• Ash Wednesday
• Maundy Thursday
• Good Friday
• Christmas Eve
